This book focuses on defining and discussing the primary elements of the natal horoscope
- the degrees, signs, houses, planets and aspects. There are some additional sections which explore the
philosophical (mostly Greek) underpinnings and ramifications of these elements. This work is suggestive
and descriptive; it take a narrative approach to these topics - by which means I hope that the reader
will be inspired to invent their own approach and so discover the rich wisdom daily delivered to us by
the ancient light of the stars.

There is a step beyond the study of astrology, and that is its active practice. That
is the willful, heartfelt and intelligent assertion of planetary power. Here one 'activates' the various
talents of the soul. Although one remains aware of the mundane and psychological significance of natal
configurations, transits, and progressions, one is no longer passive to them. One may certainly try this
at any stage, and even meet with success, but it's like blindly following a recipe, unsure of whether
you're baking a cake or making plastique. Only when we have been humbled by our own inborn ignorance
and by our own encounters with the Gods should this step be taken.
Only then can one say things like: "I'm going to activate Mars; I'm going to consciously invoke a shadow-battle." Without the appropriate preparation and purification, one may have the experience of confronting the shadow, and may even survive the encounter, but it's unlikely that the experience will be assimilated, or that the ego will be transformed. However, at some point it must be taken, and our studies should always keep this end in mind. We are not to become masters of our fate, but we must become masters of our own will. Since the seat of the will is actually within the Soul, we must become well-acquainted with that aspect of our being if we are to succeed in this endeavor. At any rate, by the time anyone gets this far, the dangers, qualifications and admonishments are poignantly self-evident.
